The Old Abbey The town of Loughrea is situated on the main Dublin to Galway road some 37 km from Galway City. Loughrea is a dynamic commercial centre. The retail/services sector is Loughrea's largest single employer, however companies such as Chanelle, Schlegel, and Cigna also provide substantial employment. The town has experienced an unprecedented building boom in recent years coinciding with the building of the town by-pass.The town itself is generally regarded as dating from 1236 AD when the Anglo-Norman knight Richard de Burgo built a castle there. Although the site of the castle is no longer known, a number of other medieval features remain, the most unique of these being Ireland's only functioning medieval town moat. There is also much evidence of human settlement in the area prior to the town's foundation - more than 200 sites of archaeological importance are located within a four km radius of the town. The most important of these is the famous Turoe Stone, located near the village of Bullaun. The jewel in the crown of Loughrea's heritage resources is undoubtedly St. Brendan's Cathedral. Established in 1897, it has been described as 'the greatest monument Ireland has to the revival of Celtic art, a wonderland of stained glass, statues, altars, confessionals, and lamps wrought by a multiplicity of artists and craftsmen...'
For both native and newcomer, Loughrea is a pleasant and enjoyable place to live in. Its many social and sporting clubs cater for a wide variety of interests and ages. Loughrea's idyllic location The Lake on the shores of the lake, from which it takes its name, ensures easy access to the town's wonderful natural amenities. The lake has received the Blue Flag award and the town boasts no less than five public parks, three of which are located by the lakeshore.
